Stretching out into the Irish Sea from Snowdonia, the Llyn Peninsula is a wildly beautiful landscape of dramatic coastlines, rugged mountains and beautiful countryside.
We love the ‘The Llyn’ – it’s off the beaten track’ at its very best – a much quieter area of distinctively rural Wales. It’s away from the busy tourist honeypots and mid-summer crowds and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural beauty in its own right.
Nant Gwrtheyrn, the hidden village, is set in a deep green valley surrounded by mountains and steep sea cliffs. Originally a busy quarrying village, 2000 men ‘worked the granite’ in its heyday between 1860 and 1920. The restored village is now a must-visit Welsh Heritage and Culture centre set in beautiful surroundings.
Further along the Llyn’s north coast is the stunning and unspoiled Porthdinllaen, a picture-perfect sweep of golden sand backed by towering mountains. The waterfront Ty Coch inn, just 15 minutes walk along the beach, and only accessible by foo,t was recently voted amongst the top 5 beach bars in the world. A perfect place for you to relax and grab a drink or a snack before moving on around the ‘The Llyn’
Onwards to the end of the Llyn Peninsula and you’ll find stunning scenery with views out to the Irish sea and Bardsey Island (the isle of 20,000 saints) – if ever there was a place that felt like the end of the world – this is it. Close by, the pretty little fishing village of Aberdaron has a beautiful golden beach, café’s, restaurants and a number of gift shops.
Heading along the south coast back to Snowdonia we come across the bustling seaside resort of Criccieth with its battle-worn headland castle separating two beaches. Victorian terraces command spectacular views across Cardigan Bay to Snowdonia and you’ll find a great selection of shops and eateries.
